3 tips to help make sure your child car seat is safe

| Sep 30, 2021 | Car Accidents |

The roads in Mississippi can be hazardous at the best of times. It is only natural that parents become more aware of the dangers of traveling with their children.

Children often face a high risk of injury without their parents knowing. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that up to 46% of child car seats were being used in a way that made them less effective.

As a result, it is important to examine how to improve child car seat safety. Outlined below are three tips that could help to ensure the effectiveness of child car seats:

Make sure child car seats are fitted properly

A child car seat should be held firmly in place when fitted. Seats that are able to move around and come loose may place the child in greater danger. Ensuring that child car seats are properly fastened could reduce the chances of an accident. One useful tip for checking this is to try and move the seat when fitted. If the seat moves more than one inch in any direction, then it probably needs to be tightened.

Avoid second-hand child car seats

Financial pressures on new parents can be difficult. However, purchasing a brand new car seat is worthwhile. With second-hand products, you are never sure if they have already been in an accident.

Pay attention to the expiration date

All child car seats will tend to have an expiration date. This is commonly placed on labels, instruction manuals or can be readily found online.

Understanding the law in relation to car seats could be in your best interests. If you have been involved in a road traffic accident, then it is important to know that you have legal rights and protections.
